Firewood guide

How to light a wood burner

A good fire starts with dry wood and plenty of air. The top-down method lights quickly, makes less smoke and needs less fiddling.

What you need

Two or three dry logs, a handful of kindling and one or two firelighters. Every WeeLogRun delivery includes kindling and firelighters, so you're never caught short.

Step by step

1. Open the air vents fully.

2. Place two logs side by side at the bottom of the stove.

3. Lay kindling across the logs in a criss-cross, leaving gaps for air.

4. Put a firelighter or two on top of the kindling and light it.

5. Leave the door slightly ajar for a few minutes until the kindling is burning well, then close it.

6. Once the logs have caught properly, turn the air down a little to get a steady burn.

Keeping it going

Add one or two logs at a time when the fire has burned down to glowing embers. Overloading the stove can smother the fire and cause smoke.

Safety first

Have your chimney swept regularly, fit a carbon monoxide alarm in the same room as the stove, and always follow your stove manufacturer's instructions.
